History of Adsean Farm

Our studio complex has quite the character. Everyone that explores the area always asks us about it so we’ve compiled the history of how we got to where we are!

Adsdean Farm, located near Funtington in West Sussex, has a rich history dating back to the post-Norman Conquest era. By the 12th century, it was part of the estate of the Earl of Arundel and remained so until its sale in 1845.

In the mid-19th century, the estate underwent significant development. Adsdean House, built around 1850, was later altered and enlarged by the renowned architect Norman Shaw in 1877. The house, designed in the Gothic style, has been partly demolished but remains a Grade II listed building.

The surrounding parkland, known as Adsdean Park, was established between 1840 and 1880. An estate map from 1840, when the land was owned by Mr. John Scardeville, shows only Adsdean Farm amidst fields and some woodland. By the 1870s, the area had transformed into a well-wooded park with a principal house, gardens, and parkland.

In the 20th century, Adsdean Farm became a working family farm. The Hoare family has been farming the land for over 60 years, raising cattle and pigs and cultivating 240 acres of arable crops. They employ a combination of traditional and modern farming methods to ensure high animal welfare and quality produce.

Today, Adsdean Farm continues to operate as a family-run farm, offering farm-reared beef, pork, and fresh eggs through their on-site farm shop, which has been in operation since 1970..

Today, Adsdean Farm remains a testament to the enduring legacy of rural enterprise in West Sussex.
